Top 5 Games of 2018

So for my first blog post, I decided to start off easy and list my favorite games of 2018.

A bit of a disclaimer, I played other games this year that I enjoyed more than some of the games listed here, but I decided to keep this list limited to games that were released in 2018. Also, while I haven’t “hundred percented” any of these, I have at least finished the main story (for all but one, which I’ll explain later). Full reviews of these games will likely be coming in the future, but for now I’ll put a brief description.

5. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Odyssey is only this far down the list because I just started it. Even so, I love the Assassin’s Creed series, I really enjoyed Origins, and so I’m comfortable putting it on this list. The gameplay is very similar to Origins, but definitely refined. The world is beautiful (while Origin’s felt sparse in some areas). The dialogue choices make the player feel like they have an actual role in the plot which is new to the series and makes picking responses stressful. I still have a long way to go in the game, but I’m loving it so far.

4. Detroit: Become Human

That this game is on this list might surprise some people. Some have called it boring, or the characters are uninteresting, or whatever super critical but completely valid criticism they can come up with, and that’s fine. The deeper questions at play, involving morality, free will, consciousness, etc. – make every choice an important one, from picking up a fish to attacking a belligerent father. When I’m looking for a good game, I look for a good story that engages me. And Detroit definitely achieves that.

3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Ahh, just a classic good time. This is the 6th game in this franchise, and the last time I played was Brawl on the Wii. This game is such great update to a beloved franchise. Now, I will agree with a lot of the commentators that it is a slog to unlock all 74 characters (74!), but it’s enjoyable enough. I played through the World of Light campaign and boy does that take a while (20+ hours — especially if you’re not very good, like me). The main focus of this game though is the multiplayer which, though I haven’t spent a ton of time with, delivers in every way.

2. Marvel’s Spider-Man (PS4)

Okay, now this a fun one. I heard in Spring 2018 that this game was going to be coming out, and then went and bought a PS4 (my first ever PlayStation!). I’ve been a Spider-Man fan for years (I think I’ve read every issue of Amazing Spider-Man since 2007), and I can tell you, this is a Spider-Man story. The web-swinging is perfect, the combat is enjoyable, and the story…oh the story. It features an adult Peter Parker who by now knows how to be Spider-Man which makes jumping into his tights effortless. The side characters like Mary Jane and Aunt May are faithful adaptations (in my opinion) to their comic counterparts, and the villains are absolutely perfect in this game (I would argue that Spider-Man has the best rogues gallery of any super hero, though I would definitely hear an argument for Batman). I could go on for days (and I likely will once I do a full review), so just…play this game.

1. God of War

Having just read that, you may be surprised that Spider-Man wasn’t number one on this list, but that just goes to show how great God of War is. This is a soft reboot of the franchise, with an older Kratos who looks back on his more blood thirsty ways (featured in the previous 3 games) with regret. It is a very emotional journey, with his young son Atreus tagging along. Now I didn’t play the original games, but after finishing this, I don’t know if I can go back and see younger Kratos. While the gameplay is fluid and the combat is engaging, the story is where it shines (can you tell I have a type). I don’t want to get into spoiler territory, but I will say that this is a much deeper and engaging story than I have seen in other games.

Honorable Mention

Pokemon: Let’s Go (Eevee) – yeah, it has it’s differences, but it’s still Pokemon so I can’t really complain

Red Dead Redemption 2 – I have some problems with this game, despite the objective awesomeness (fullish review coming soon).

Bonus Round – Above I mentioned that there were other games I played this year that I really enjoyed, and just because they didn’t come out this year, doesn’t mean I can’t talk about them.

In no particular order:

Super Mario Odyssey – a really great platformer featuring everyone favorite plumber who probably doesn’t own a wrench.

Overwatch – an MMO (the only one I’ve played) and really the game that introduced me to the gaming world and taught me that you don’t have to be good at games to have fun. I might talk about this game more once Overwatch League comes back for season two.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice – Oh my what a game! The story is incredible, the visuals are great, and the sound is unbelievable, especially when playing with headphones (I’ll definitely be doing a full review of this).

Red Dead Redemption – I thought I should familiarize myself with the series before the second one came out, and it’s a really good game.

Assassin’s Creed Origins – A really good update to a franchise I really enjoy.

Horizon: Zero Dawn – My favorite game that I played in 2018, hands down (yes more than God of War and Spider-Man). A full post will likely be coming about this game.

What was your favorite game of 2018?

Thanks for reading along.

Signing off…

  1. I installed Detroit just before Christmas but didn’t get time to play it during the holidays! I’ve heard a lot of good things about the story so I’m really looking forward to it.
